Shivaree
Although they list Ray Charles and Captain Beefheart as their prime influences, the US alt-pop trio, Shivaree is more akin to a cross between the roots rock of Cowboy Junkies and the dance pop of No Doubt. Singer Ambrosia Parsley usually attracts the lion's share of attention (owing to her model-like good looks), while guitarist Duke McVinnie (guitar) and Danny McGough (keyboards) are considered veteran session men, as McGough has toured with Tom Waits and McVinnie has recorded with X's Exene Cervenka and the Blasters' Dave Alvin for their respective solo projects. Although each of its members has lived in a variety of US locales over the years, it was in California during the late 90s that the trio met up. Originally naming themselves Junebug, the trio was forced to change it when they found out another band had already claimed the name. Shortly after adopting the new moniker Shivaree, the band signed a recording contract with Capitol Records. Their superb 1999 debut, I Oughtta Give You A Shot In The Head For Making Me Live In This Dump, failed to make an impression on the US charts although the trio enjoyed greater success in Europe.
