Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis
One of the great sax pugilists, tenor man Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis was featured as a star soloist in many of the NYC big bands of the '40s and '50s, most notably Count Basie's. His work with Shirley Scott virtually defined the blustery tenor/bluesy organ combo sound, and a later dual-tenor outfit co-led with Johnny Griffin gave rise to uncompromised excitement and sonic virility at every turn.
