Andrea Parker
b. 2 April 1972, Kent, England. This experimental, London-based techno DJ and producer is signed to Mo' Wax Records. She contributed to experimental electronica releases by Inky Blacknuss (with Alex Knight) and Two Sandwiches Short Of A Lunchbox (with David Morley) and provided vocals on Koh Toa's single, "Sundown' before being signed to Mo" Wax. Her first single for the label was "Melodius Thunk" the title punning on the name of the jazz musician, Thelonious Monk - which was an electro workout popular with both UK and US DJs. "Rocking Chair", the second single, was an emotional ballad featuring string arrangements by Will Malone, who had worked on horror movie soundtracks and Massive Attack's classic "Unfinished Sympathy". Parker began as a DJ at London techno clubs such as Lost and the renowned Megatripolis but grew up in Yalding, Kent, listening to artists such as This Mortal Coil and the Cowboy Junkies. Her 1999 album, Kiss My Arp, was recorded with her long-time studio partner, David Morley, in rural Bavaria, Germany. The Arp in the title refers to one of Morley's antiquated ARP keyboards. Parker is also an enthusiast of other classic synthesisers such as Moogs and Fairlights. Influenced by artists including the Art Of Noise, she enjoys using "found sounds" that are sampled and manipulated using studio equipment. These might even include the sound of her own sneezes, or that of her car tyres running over "cats' eyes" lighting devices in the road. The result of this potpourri of interests is innovative electronic music that also shows a love of the art of songwriting. Parker continues to work as a DJ and occasionally remixes for other artists, such as Depeche Mode.
