One of pop music's true survivors, singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon took the biz's little-traveled alternate routes to her own brand of success. She had several minor pop hits in the early 1960s, while at the same time writing hit tunes for the likes of Brenda Lee and the Searchers. She collaborated with everyone from Jack Nitzche and Randy Newman to Jimmy Page, and opened for the Beatles on portions of their 1964 U.S. tour. DeShannon scored her biggest hit in 1969 with her self-penned "Put A Little Love in Your Heart" (which would be a hit over 20 years later for Al Green and Annie Lennox). Though DeShannon's solo career was marked by only sporadic successes, she never stopped writing and recording.
