Diana King
b. 8 November 1970, Spanish Town, Jamaica, West Indies. As a child King lived in the Hope Road neighbourhood, Kingston, famous for number 56, the Jamaican home of Bob Marley and his family. She often played with his children Cedella and Sharon, who in the early 80s continued their father's work as the Melody Makers. King began her singing career performing on the tourism circuit in the north of Jamaica at hotels between Negril and Ocho Rios. She soon found work in the studios; in 1990 she recorded with Junior Tucker, the child prodigy-turned-ragga star, for "Stop To Start", included on his album Don't Test. The track was featured on two single releases, "Sixteen" and the "Junior Tucker EP". In 1993 an album of Bob Marley cover versions, Stir It Up, by a variety of Jamaican performers included a version of the title track by King which bought her to the attention of major label Sony. Her initial release, "Shy Guy", crossed over into the pop charts in 1995 which led to the release of Tougher Than Love, which showcased her skills both as a singer and DJ. The album included a version of Alton Ellis' "I'm Still In Love" produced by Sugar Minott and Coxsone Dodd. The follow-up single, "Ain't Nobody", failed to match its predecessor's performance. Think Like A Girl featured King's version of "I Say A Little Prayer", and was included on the soundtrack for the movie My Best Friend's Wedding. In 1999 she performed guest vocals on a version of Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together?". The track was featured on Kyle Eastwood's debut, From There To Here. After taking time out to raise her family, King returned in 2002 with a new recording contract with Maverick Records. Her first album for the label was Respect.
