Lo Fidelity Allstars
Formed in 1996, the Lo-Fidelity Allstars combine indie and dance influences in a manner reminiscent of the late 80s' "Madchester" or "baggy" scene. From Brighton, Sussex, England, they released their debut single, "Kool Roc Bass", for local record label Skint Records in 1997. The band members originally employed impenetrable surnames, with songwriter Phil "The Albino Priest" Ward the main driving force. Originally from Leeds, he formed the band while working at Tower Records in London's Piccadilly Circus. He originally intended the Lo-Fidelity All Stars to be an instrumental-only band, until meeting with vocalist Dave "The Wrekked Train" Randall and keyboard player Matt "Sheriff John Stone" Stone, whose alcohol-fuelled ramblings neatly complemented their loose, funky sound. The band, whose line-up also includes bass player Andy "A One Man Crowd Called Gentile" Dickinson, keyboardist Martin "The Many Tentacles" Whiteman, and drummer Johnny "The Slammer" Machin, achieved further exposure with a series of 1997 support slots to 18 Wheeler, a remix of Cast's "History" and two further singles, "Disco Machine Gun" and "Vision Incision'. Their swaggering debut album How To Operate With A Blown Mind, which entered the UK charts at number 15 in June, was widely touted as one of 1998"s key releases.
