Subhumans
One of the most popular and entertaining of the 80s anarcho punk bands influenced by the cottage industry approach of Crass. The most significant departure from their brethren would be in the use of music that traced its heritage more to Led Zeppelin than the Damned. Lyrically, the Subhumans trod familiar territory (vegetarianism, human rights, anti-government sloganeering), though they did so with more humour than many. For instance, "Are you prepared to die for your beliefs, or just to dye your hair", from "Work Rest Play Die", questioned the authenticity of the movement of which they were a part. The band comprised Dick Lucas (b. Richard Lucas; vocals), Bruce (guitar), Grant (bass) and Trotsky (drums), though for 29:29 Split Vision Phil would replace Grant. On later recordings the Subhumans continued to expand into other musical areas, largely leaving behind their original thrash-based formula (although their debut EP had anticipated such eclecticism with a reggae number). Members of the band would go on to form Citizen Fish, whose blend of punk and ska would be popularized throughout the UK on the free festival circuit. Dick Lucas stayed true to the band's anarcho roots by continuing to operate his own Bluurg label for releases by both his own bands plus many others.
