D.O.A.
This explosive band was formed in 1978 in Vancouver, Canada, quickly emerging as their country's most popular and influential hardcore act. The original line-up featured Joey "Shithead" Keithley (lead vocals/guitar), Randy Rampage (bass/vocals), Chuck Biscuits (b. Charles Montgomery, 17 April 1965, USA; drums), and Brad Kent (guitar, ex-Avengers). Early releases included the Disco Sucks EP on Keithley's own Sudden Death Records, an incredibly rare artefact. Dave Gregg was added as second guitarist in 1980 to expand the band's sound (Kent was only a temporary member). In the early 80s, D.O.A. toured incessantly, and not only defined their own sound but much of the subsequent hardcore genre. The Positively D.O.A. EP and Hardcore 81 proved hugely important to the development of North American punk. The latter album even gave the movement an identity, not only in name, but as a political agenda.
