Tanya Savory
b. Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Like many contemporary roots performers, Savory's music is a mixture of folk, country and rock, but unlike Mary-Chapin Carpenter and Nanci Griffith, there is also a strong bluegrass component in her work. After being a finalist three times, she won the songwriting competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1996. The following year's impressive independently released debut led to a recording contract with the Philo subsidiary of Rounder Records, for whom she debuted with Town To Town. Savory often writes about her childhood in small town America ("Passed Him By", which tells of her minister father, and "I Don't Hear That Train") and she captures dramatic events exceptionally well ("When The River Rose"). Her songs are beautifully crafted and "Reason Enough" has the makings of a classic bluegrass song.
