Stuart Duncan
b. Stuart Ian Duncan, 14 April 1964, Quantico, Virginia, USA. Duncan was raised in a musical environment, his father playing banjo, his mother guitar, and both singing folk music. He took to the banjo but it was the violin he liked most. Owing to his parents' extensive and eclectic record collection he heard early country music, western swing and jazz violin. He appeared at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of eight. At school in Santa Paula, California, he played guitar in a school band before attending South Plains College, Levelland, Texas. After college Duncan joined various bands, some of them playing bluegrass music, including Lost Highway, and he also worked with guitarist Larry Sparks. In 1985 he joined the Nashville Bluegrass Band, which had been formed the previous year. He toured extensively with the band, including visiting China, and remained associated with outfit through the 90s and into the early 00s. Another long-term musical relationship was one formed in California with singer-songwriter Alison Brown.
