Wheatus
This Long Island, New York, USA-based guitar pop outfit was created by songwriter Brendan B. Brown (b. 11 October 1973, Glencove, New York, USA; guitar/vocals). After struggling to make an impact in other bands, Brown recruited his younger brother Peter (b. 1 September 1976, Glencove, New York, USA; drums), multi-instrumentalist Phil A. Jimenez (b. 4 April 1975, USA), and Rich Leigey (bass) to record Wheatus' debut album. In an unusual act of faith by a major record label, Columbia Records allowed the band to record and produce their debut. Brown's take on adolescent brat-pop thankfully owes more to the sly humour of Weezer than the shock-rock inanities of Blink-182 and the Bloodhound Gang, with tracks such as the hit single "Teenage Dirtbag", "Sunshine" and "Truffles" displaying a fine understanding of the rudiments of power pop. Leigey was replaced by Mike McCabe shortly before their debut album was released.
