Jean Redpath
b. 28 April 1937, Edinburgh, Scotland. This traditional singer and guitar player is well-known for her children's songs and her extensive collection of the works of Robert Burns. Redpath emigrated to the USA in 1961. After an indifferent start, she moved to New York, and within six weeks had played the renowned Gerde's Folk City. Although Skipping Barefoot Through The Heather was recorded on Prestige International before Scottish Ballad Book, on Elektra, the latter was released first. The Robert Burns project began in 1976, but was different from another series of Burns songs produced for Scottish Records. For The Scottish Fiddle - The Music And The Songs, Jean had wanted to combine the violin and cello as they have long been associated with Scottish traditional music. The blend was successful, giving a classic, almost mournful, feel to the music. During the latter part of the 70s, Jean was lecturing in the music department of the Wesleyan University. Always productive, Redpath continues to perform and record traditional folk music.
