Peter Rowan
b. 4 July 1942, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Rowan's long career began in 1956 as a member of the Cupids, a college band that developed his interest in an amalgam of Tex-Mex and roots music. After he graduated he played mandolin with the Mother Bay State Entertainers and later on joined two influential groups, the Charles River Valley Boys and Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys (from 1964 to 1966). For two years he led the critically acclaimed progressive rock band Earth Opera with fellow traditional acolyte David Grisman, before joining Sea Train in 1970. Although both units were rock-based, Rowan maintained his bluegrass roots as a member of Muleskinner, Old And In The Way, which also featured Jerry Garcia, and the Free Mexican Airforce. His subsequent solo work has placed the performer firmly within America's folk heritage.
