With the 1960s combo Sir Douglas Quintet, supergroup the Texas Tornados, and on his own, Doug Sahm helped define Tex-Mex music with his blend of blues, R&B, country, and traditional Mexicana. His death in 1999 brought to a close an important chapter in American roots music.
