Butch Hancock
b. George Hancock, 12 July 1945, Lubbock, Texas, USA. Folk rock singer-songwriter, and part-time painter, whose early leanings towards music were temporarily frustrated by architectural school. Hancock left to work on his father's farm, his interest in singing rekindled by long days of driving tractors on the dusty Texas plains of the 60s. Drawing heavily on the acoustic traditions of rock 'n' roll, and Bob Dylan in particular, he formed his first band, the Flatlanders, in 1970. Together with Joe Ely and Jimmy Gilmore, they recorded for the Plantation label run by Shelby Singleton. However, the results were not heard prior to Ely's rise to fame in the 70s. Continuing as a solo artist, Hancock relocated, first to Clarendon and finally to Austin, to release albums on his own Rainlight label. The late 70s and early 80s witnessed a stream of gentle, intelligent albums, including two recorded at the same show (the solo 1981: A Space Odyssey and Firewater (Seeks Its Own Level), which featured backing from local musicians).
