By the time this Los Angeles, California, USA-formed psychedelic country outfit had released their self-titled debut album in 2000, their Big Star-influenced 1998 single, "Desert Skies", had been revamped as an album opener that now nodded towards both Buffalo Springfield and the Monkees. They had also shed Josh Schwartz (b. Los Angeles, California, USA; guitar/vocals), Tom Sanford (b. Los Angeles, California, USA; drums), and Pete Kinne (b. Los Angeles, California, USA; percussion). Jimi Hey (b. Los Angeles, California, USA; drums/vocals), who left them after a few gigs, is credited with naming the band after two LA streets, although the song "Beechwood Park" from the Zombies' 1968 masterpiece Odessey & Oracle has also been cited as a reference point. Following "Desert Skies", core members Chris Gunst (b. 16 December 1974, Huntington Beach, California, USA; vocals/guitar/harmonica) and Brent Rademaker (b. 7 October 1964, Lincoln, Illinois, USA; bass/vocals), who had previously played with Further, and fellow founder member Dave Scher (b. 1975, Newport Beach, California, USA; keyboards/lap steel guitar/vocals) recruited Aaron Sperske (b. 21 June 1970, Los Angeles, California, USA; drums/vocals, ex-Lilys).
