Honey Cone
The product of various Los Angeles female groups, Carolyn Willis (b. Los Angeles, California, USA), Edna Wright (b. Los Angeles, California, USA) and Shellie Clark (b. Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA), first came together as Honey Cone to work on the Andy Williams television show. Each was an established singer: Willis in the Girlfriends, Clark in the Ikettes, while Wright had sung in the Blossoms alongside her sister, Darlene Love. Early Honey Cone singles, "While You're Out Looking For Sugar" (the debut single on Holland/Dozier/Holland's Hot Wax label) and "Girls It Ain't Easy", were R&B hits in 1969, before two 1971 soul chart-toppers, "Want Ads" and "Stick Up", established the trio (the former also topped the pop charts). Stylistically, such songs invoked a saltier Supremes, and this gritty approach was confirmed on "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" and "Sittin' On A Time Bomb (Waitin' For The Hurt To Come)". The group broke up in 1973 when later singles were less successful, leaving Edna Wright free to resume her career as a session singer.
