The Flaming Ember
Formed in Detroit, Michigan USA as the Flaming Embers, this white rock/soul unit consisted of Joe Sladich (guitar), Bill Ellis (piano), Jim Bugnel (bass) and Jerry Plunk (drums). The quartet made its debut in 1968 on the local Ric Tic label, before joining the Hot Wax stable the following year. Bolstered by a pulsating Holland/Dozier/Holland production, Flaming Ember scored two US Top 30 hits with "Mind, Body And Soul" and "Westbound #9", but the group's heterogeneous sound proved their undoing. Too soul-based for rock, too rock-based for soul, the quartet fell between two markets and split up in 1973.
