Crooked Fingers
Best known among the US indie rock scene as the vocalist/guitarist of the well-respected North Carolina-based outfit Archers Of Loaf, Eric Bachmann formed the folk-based solo project Crooked Fingers in the wake of his former band's 1998 split up. Deeply influenced by Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, and Tom Waits, Bachmann is joined on Crooked Fingers recordings by a revolving cast of musicians including guitarists Darren Loucas and Laird Dixon, and singer Orenda Fink. Crooked Fingers issued two albums for the independent Warm label, 2000's Crooked Fingers and 2001's Bring On The Snakes. In 2001, Bachmann released his solo debut, Short Careers, but he soon returned to Crooked Fingers. The band switched to the Merge label (who had just issued Bachmann's solo disc), issuing a five-track EP of cover versions in spring 2002. Reservoir Songs featured renditions of classics such as the Queen/David Bowie collaboration "Under Pressure" and Bruce Springsteen's "The River". Early in 2003 the Crooked Fingers released their third album, Red Devil Dawn.
