Voodoo Glow Skulls
The mid- to late 90s saw a mini-ska punk explosion occur in the USA, as countless bands from California stormed the charts, with one of the first to emerge being the Voodoo Glow Skulls. Originating from Riverside, the band was formed in 1988 by brothers Frank (vocals), Eddie (guitar) and Jorge Casillas (bass), and Jerry O'Neill (drums). They branched out from their hardcore punk style with the addition of a horn section comprising Joey Hernandez (saxophone), Joe McNally (trumpet) and Brodie Johnson (trombone). The sextet carved out their niche by playing local backyard parties, and opening for established acts such as the Angry Samoans, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and the Dickies. The band issued their 1993 debut, Who Is, This Is?, on the indie label Dr. Strange Records, which in turn led to a contract with the more established Epitaph Records. The sextet continued to tour and issue albums at a steady pace throughout the late 90s, including further releases such as 1995's Firme (which was issued in both English and Spanish versions), 1997's Baile De Los Locos, 1998's The Band Geek Mafia, and their first release of the new millennium, 2000's Symbolic. Despite building a large and dedicated fanbase for their live shows, the Voodoo Glow Skulls have so far failed to break through to the mainstream. Undeterred, the band continues on, as they switched to the Victory label, and issued Steady As She Goes, in 2002. The album featured new trumpet player Mason Ball.
