Mu-ziq
Based in south London, England, -Ziq is effectively studio musician Mike Paradinas (b. 18 June 1971), although he has also worked in tandem with Francis Naughton. Both were students when they first met the Aphex Twin, Richard James, who invited them to join his new Rephlex Records imprint. Unlike the aforementioned ambient guru, neither were technocrats, preferring an organic, untutored approach to the creation of cerebral dance music. Their debut double album was recorded using only synthesizers, a beatbox, and a four-track mixer. Within a few months of studio time -Ziq claimed to have over 300 completed tracks sitting on the shelf, an output that threatened to eclipse even their mentor's notorious profligacy. By 1995's In Pine Effect, the first result of a new distribution deal for Paradinas' own Planet label within the Virgin Records empire, he was effectively a solo artist. He had also found time to record as Gary Moscheles And The Badass Motherfunkers (in a jazz funk vein) and Jake Slazenger (for the underground dance label Clear Records). Lunatic Harness and Royal Astronomy, enjoyed a cult following in America when they were released through the Astralwerks label. Paradinas revealed another alter ego, Kid Spatula, for April 2000's Full Sunken Beats.
