Ellen Allien
b. Germany. Two events in 1989 impacted heavily on the music making of German DJ/producer and label head Ellen Allien: she became immersed in dance music for the first time and the Berlin Wall came down. The former occurred during a year spent in London, England at the height of acid house and prompted Allien to begin DJing. The latter influenced the music scene in her home-town more generally but no less importantly. Having relocated back from London to Berlin, Allien began DJing at venues/events such as UFO, Tresor, Fischlabor and The Bunker. Working to a principle of "don't wait for something to happen - activate oneself", Allien hosted a radio show and ran a record label, both named Braincandy, and worked at Berlin's Delerium record store. Although Braincandy folded (Allien has cited her youth and initial lack of self-confidence for this), a series of parties under the BPitch Control moniker eventually mutated into a new label. The label has released music by Autotune, Tok Tok vs Soffy O, Sascha Funk and Nora Below as well as Allien's own recordings and mix compilations. Allien also curates a 7-inch only label, Spielplatz/Playground.
