Gerardo
b. Gerardo Mej¡a III, 16 April 1965, Guayaquil, Ecuador. This Latin rapper based his career in Los Angeles following his move to Glendale, California, USA, at the age of 12. From the outset of his career Gerardo has specialised in both Spanish and English rhymes, though it is his athleticism in jumping between the two languages which has most distinguished him. In 1985 he won two separate televised street-dance competitions, leading to roles in the movies Colors, playing a gang leader, and Can't Buy Me Love. He would enjoy his first major crossover success for Interscope Records in April 1990, with "Rico Suave" making number 7 in the US charts. "We Want The Funk" was also successful. His debut album, released the following year, included an appearance by "rap grandfather' George Clinton. The title of this collection, Mo" Ritmo, translates as "more rhythm". Notorious for taking the stage bare-chested and with his zip undone to tantalise his female followers, Gerardo enjoyed a short period of popularity as an MTV star but ultimately enjoyed more fame on the Latin dance scene. He latterly became head of A&R at Interscope's Dance division, and was instrumental in signing new artists such as Enrique Iglesias and Bubba Sparxxx. He returned to the studio in the new millennium to record Fame, Sex Y Dinero.
