Almeda Riddle
b. 1898, White County, Arkansas, USA, d. 30 June 1986, Heber Springs, Arkansas, USA. A traditional and old-time singer from the Ozark Mountains. Music played an important part in her early family life and she grew up playing fiddle and organ and was taught to read music by her singing-teacher father. She acquired a large repertoire of Ozark and other folk ballads and later sang many old-time numbers unaccompanied. In 1959/60, she was recorded by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress and also included on the set of his field recordings issued in 1961. During the 60s and 70s, she regularly appeared at folk and traditional music events all over the USA and at some major festivals, including Newport. During her career, she recorded for Vanguard, Rounder Records and other minor labels.
