Black 'N' Blue
Formerly known as Boogie Star, Black 'N' Blue were formed in Portland, Oregon, USA, in 1981. After a series of line-up shuffles, the band stabilized with Jaime St. James (vocals), Tommy Thayer (guitar), Jeff Warner (guitar), Patrick Young (bass) and Peter Holmes (drums). Relocating to Los Angeles in 1982, they forged a contract with Geffen Records and delivered their self-titled debut album in 1984. Produced by Dieter Dierks, the album was classic hard rock and sounded surprisingly un-American, shunning the party-metal approach of Ratt and Quiet Riot, and having more in common with the Scorpions and Def Leppard. Failing to attract media attention, the band dropped this approach and attempted to emulate the style of Kiss and Mtley Cre. With Gene Simmons (Kiss's bassist) producing their third and fourth albums, the accusations of imitation grew even stronger. Failing to find commercial success, the band folded in 1989. Patrick Young went on to Dokken, vocalist James joined Madhouse, Thayer teamed up with Harlow and the remaining pair formed Wet Engine.
