Tom Browne
b. 1954, New York City, New York, USA. Browne started to learn the piano at the age of 11 and continued his studies at the Manhattan School of Music and Art. Later, he graduated in physics from Kingsborough College. It was listening to an Ornette Coleman album that sparked his interest in jazz. His first gig was with the Weldon Irvine Group in 1975, followed by stints with Sonny Fortune and the Fatback Band. In 1979, he recorded Browne Sugar for GRP Records, with the 14-year-old Marcus Miller playing the bass. There was a succession of similar albums, notably 1980's Love Approach featuring "Funkin' For Jamaica", but Browne dropped out of the music scene in the late 80s to work as a charter pilot. He returned to the studio in the mid-90s to record a succession of well-received albums for the Hip Bop label.
