Half Pint
b. Lyndon Roberts, 11 November 1961, Western Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. One of the first and finest dancehall reggae singers, Half Pint has never entirely maintained his career at the highest level, but nonetheless has had an impressive, if sporadic, string of huge Jamaican hits. An enthusiastic and exciting singer, Half Pint, one of seven children, left school in 1976 and spent the next six years trying to break into the music business before recording a debut single, "Sally". "Money Man Skank" was a major hit and kicked off a five-track debut album for Jammy's. Early hits "One In A Million" and "Pouchie Lou" for producer Prince (later King) Jammy established his style, and Half Pint's diminutive figure traversed the world on Sly And Robbie's 1985 Taxi Tour, paying the duo back with the singles "World Inflation", "Hold On", and "Night Life Lady". A visit to producer George Phang brought about his biggest hit, "Greetings" (1985), an unavoidable refrain in the world's reggae cities, and then the Rolling Stones covered his "Winsome", to the complete astonishment of the singer. Victory followed the blueprint of Greetings to the letter and sold well in America. Since then, Half Pint has been less successful, but he has a considerable following, eagerly waiting for another Greetings, and in the spring of 1992 the big reggae hit "Substitute Lover" was a sign of his reviving fortunes.
