Leaders Of The New School
Uniondale, New York-based hip-hop troupe, combining aggressive vocals with loping bass beats, who like many of the newer rap artists of the 90s deployed lyrics which extolled the joys of marijuana. However, they retained an experimental edge - particularly in their complex rhythmic structures and "mysticism". Fronted by the giant Busta Rhymes (b. 1972, Brooklyn, New York, USA), an impressive rapper who served a long apprenticeship freestyling before cutting his first record. Backed by Charlie "The Freestyle Wizard" Brown, Dinco "The Rhyme Scientist" D and Milo In De Dance (aka The Cut Monitor), the Leaders concerned themselves not only with the current problems facing black culture in general and hip-hop in particular, but also its immediate past: "Leaders Of The New School learnt from the old school and groups like the Cold Crush Brothers. We then developed our own unique style which a lot of people have started to copy'. It was certainly true that the band had etched a real impression with their debut, with three tracks produced by Eric Sadler of the Bomb Squad. The temptation to make their second set a facsimile of the winning formula was avoided, subtitling the album "The Inner Mind's Eye, The Endless Dispute With Reality". The group broke up in 1994, with Rhymes going on to a successful solo career.
