Dwayne Burno
b. 1975, Bloomfield, Connecticut, USA. Encouraged by his father, an amateur saxophonist and songwriter, Greene acquired his first instrument, an alto saxophone, at the age of six. He studied formally while still in junior high school and quickly developed a passion for jazz. In 1990, he was introduced to Jackie McLean, then director of the jazz programme at Hartt College of Music. He also drew a great deal from working with McLean's community school, the Artists' Collective. On graduating from high school, Greene attended Hartt where he proved to be an excellent student, displaying a prodigious ability to assimilate knowledge. He also switched to tenor saxophone. In 1996, shortly before completing his studies at Hartt, Greene was runner-up in a Thelonious Monk Institute competition. Moving to New York, he played with various leaders, including Omer Avital, Kenny Barron, Avishai Cohen, Eddie Henderson, Jason Lindner, Claudio Roditi, with whom he made his recording debut on Double Standards, TanaReid, Horace Silver, and the New Jazz Composers Octet. Among musicians recruited by Greene for his own recording sessions are trumpeter Darren Barrett, bass player Dwayne Burno and, fellow students with McLean, trombonist Steve Davis and drummer Eric McPherson.
