b. Norma Christine Waterson, 15 August 1939, Kingston Upon Hull, East Riding, Yorkshire, England. Both sides of Waterson's family were musical, her father playing guitar and piano, her mother the piano. Almost all of her extended family were accomplished musicians on one instrument or another. However, she was orphaned at an early age and raised, alongside her sister Elaine (Lal Waterson) and brother Mike, by her grandmother. They formed their first informal band together in the late 50s, singing around local tea houses and friends' homes. Later they opened one of the first folk clubs in Yorkshire, which still exists today. In the early 60s Lal, Mike and Norma formed the Watersons, alongside their cousin, John Harrison. One of the most influential harmony vocals bands on the English folk scene of that time, they toured widely before their break-up in 1968. They re-formed in 1972, at which time Harrison's place was taken first by Bernie Vickers then Martin Carthy, who married Norma in the same year (their daughter, Eliza Carthy, is the darling of the new generation of contemporary UK folk singers). The Watersons have continued to appear together sporadically ever since, though each member has also concentrated on solo activities.
