Gisselle
b. Gisselle Ortiz C ceres, 28 March 1969, New York City, New York, USA. Of Puerto Rican heritage, merengue vocalist Gisselle was raised in New York City where she excelled as a teenage dancer. Her dancing career led her to performances on stage and television before she launched herself as a vocalist with the merengue group Kaviar. In 1991 she moved on to Punto G with whom she enjoyed a couple of years of great fame, both in America and her spiritual homeland of Puerto Rico. C ceres was talent-spotted by BMG Records while singing with Punto G, leading to a solo recording contract with the label. Her 1995 self-titled debut album was a durable hit on the Latin pop market, going on to achieve platinum sales status owing in no small part to the success of the singles "Perfume De Mujer En Tu Camisa" and "Pesadilla'. Follow-up albums, including A Que Vuelve (1996) and Atada (1998) and the Sergio Vargas collaboration Juntos, maintained the singer's popularity, but it was not until 2000"s Grammy-nominated Voy A Enamorarte that Gisselle broke through into the North American market. The album introduced a range of ballads and bachatas to the singer's merengue repertoire, a ploy repeated to lesser effect on the following year's 8. Nevertheless, this album and subsequent releases have helped spread the singer's music to a wider audience.
