Willard Grant Conspiracy
Based around vocalist Robert Fisher, this US band uses a fluctuating cast of musicians. Fisher and Paul Austin (guitar) had played together in several outfits, before forming the Boston, Massachusetts-based Flower Tamers with three accomplished musicians, James Apt (Six Finger Satellite), Malcolm Travis (ex-Sugar) and Dana Hallowell. The Willard Grant Conspiracy came about when Hallowell invited Austin and Fisher to try out his new recording studio. The informal sessions proved highly productive, providing enough finished material to release 1996's 3 am Sunday @ Fortune Otto's. An intimate and atmospheric recording, the album crossed the alternative country sound of Lambchop and the Scud Mountain Boys, with a distinctly European sense of melancholia reminiscent of the UK's Tindersticks. Stand-out tracks included a cover version of the Silos' "The Only Story I Tell" and "Morning Is The End Of The Day".
