Black Box Recorder
Memories of Luke Haines (b. 7 October 1967, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England) Baader-Meinhof project were rekindled when, in 1998, the Auteurs leader announced the formation of Black Box Recorder. Envisaged as a more permanent outfit, Haines recruited guitarist John Moore (ex-Jesus And Mary Chain) and Sarah Nixey (b. 21 December 1973, Dorset, England), formerly a backing vocalist with Moore's own band, Balloon. The lyrics of the band's debut single, "Child Psychology", (with the hypnotic line "Life is unfair/Kill yourself or get over it') neatly summarised Haines' bleak worldview. The attendant England Made Me, taking its title from a novel by the bitter old man of English letters, Graham Greene, explored Haines" love/hate relationship with his homeland, including further examples of his mordant wit on tracks such as "Ideal Home", "Hated Sunday", and "England Made Me".
