b. 26 June 1943, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Knight's early releases with producer Huey P. Meaux were overshadowed by "Mr. Big Stuff" in 1971, one of soul's most popular releases. Released on Stax Records and produced by Wardell Quezerque at the same session that yielded the King Floyd hit "Groove Me", Knight's performance was rewarded with a US number 2 pop hit and R&B number 1. The combination of the irresistible rhythms of southern and New Orleans dance styles indicated the emergence of a new-found style; however, despite several excellent follow-up singles, including "You Think You're Hot Stuff" and "Carry On", the studio team were unable to develop this style further. The singer did re-emerge during the 80s with "You Got The Papers (But I Got The Man)" (1981) and a version of the perennial, if suggestive, favourite, "My Toot Toot" (1985).
