The Hot Club of Cowtown
This western swing revival trio are named after the Quintette Du Hot Club De France combo formed by St‚phane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. Their energetic fusion of Grappelli's hot jazz and Bob Wills' western swing styles has seen them compared to other bands, such as the Squirrel Nut Zippers and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, who emerged during the mid-90s retro jive/swing boom. The founding members, Elana Fremerman (b. Kansas, USA; fiddle) and Whit Smith (b. USA; guitar/vocals), first met in New York as members of the 11-piece swing band, Western Caravan. Smith later followed Fremerman to the west coast, where they first debuted as the Hot Club Of Cowtown in 1996. After relocating to Austin, Texas they were joined by Billy Horton (b. Beaumont, Texas, USA; double bass). The trio's fusion of western swing, hot jazz, and popular standards emulated the period in the 20s and 30s when country and jazz shared the nation's airwaves.
