Wheat
Formed in Taughton, Massachusetts, USA in 1995 by college friends Scott Levesque (guitar/vocals) and Brendan Harney (drums), with the line-up completed by Ricky Brennan (guitar) and Kenny Madaras (bass). The band signed to the newly formed Chicago-based independent label, Sugar Free Records, shortly afterwards. Medeiros, a country-influenced alternative rock collection, drew comparisons to venerable bands such as Sebadoh and Pavement, and newer arrivals Sparklehorse and Smog, with Levesque's evocative songwriting reaching an early creative peak on "Karmic Episodes" and "Summer". Reduced to a trio following the departure of Madaras, the band recorded Hope And Adams with producer David Fridmann. The Mercury Rev associate polished off the rough edges of the band's sound while still retaining their ramshackle charm. The subtle embellishments added new depths to the downbeat sentiments of songs such as "Don't I Hold You", "Who's The One" and "No One Ever Told Me".
