Sylvia
b. Sylvia Kirby, 9 December 1956, Kokomo, Indiana, USA. Sylvia was singing in a church choir from a young age and always wanted to be a professional singer. She took a secretarial job for producer Tom Collins in Nashville, Tennessee in 1976 and he was soon using her on songwriting demos. She worked as a backing vocalist on sessions for Ronnie Milsap and Barbara Mandrell and went on the road with Janie Frickie. She was signed to RCA Records and worked as an opening act for Charley Pride. She had US country hits with "Tumbleweed", "Drifter" (a number 1), "The Matador" and "Heart On The Mend", which all came from her first album. In 1982 she had her second US country number 1 and a Top 20 pop hit with "Nobody", which had only been completed hours before the session. She did not develop her style of merging country music with a disco beat as, in 1985, she took time out to write more personal material. Her duet with Michael Johnson, "I Love You By Heart", was on the US country chart for 25 weeks, but her most unusual success was with James Galway on a revival of "The Wayward Wind". She was dropped by RCA in 1987 and, following a lengthy absence from the music scene, resumed live dates in 1992 performing as Sylvia Hutton. In 1996 she released an album on her own Red Pony label, again under the name Sylvia.
