The Paladins
This blues-based trio are based in San Diego, California, USA, emerging from the same roots-rock movement that produced the Blasters and Los Lobos. Otis Rush-influenced guitar player and vocalist Dave Gonzalez (b. 1963) is backed by Tom Yearsley (bass) and Jeff Donavan (drums); together they produce music that mixes rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, jive and blues in a genre-defying mix, honed to perfection by their endless touring schedule. The band were signed to hardcore blues label Alligator in 1988, releasing two albums before parting company two years later. Paradoxically they are now signed to the 4AD label (home of determinedly "indie" acts such as Cocteau Twins, Birthday Party and the Pixies), which was looking to expand its roster with acts from widely differing genres. A live CD, Million Mile Club, was released in 1997, and captured the manic energy of the band in concert (the title refers to the band having clocked up a million road miles while touring, at an average of two to three thousand miles a week). The one new song on the album, "15 Days (Under The Hood)", was a joint celebration of cars and the band's commitment to the road.
