The Ladybug Transistor
Formed during the mid-90s in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, indie pop outfit Ladybug Transistor began as merely a studio project with founding member Gary Olson (vocals/trumpet) getting together with friends Edward Powers and Javier Villegas, and recording just for the sake of it. The end result was 1995's Marlborough Farms, that resulted in a recording contract with the Merge label. During the recording of Ladybug Transistor's follow-up, 1997's Beverley Atonale, Olson opted to assemble a supporting cast, including Powers and siblings Jeff Baron (guitar) and Jennifer Baron (bass). Two more members were added to the line-up when touring commitments for the album were set up. Sasha Bell (keyboards/flute) and new drummer San Fadyl (b. USA, d. 26 April 2007, Zurich, Switzerland). It was this version of the band that recorded 1999's beautiful The Albemarle Sound, before Jennifer Baron left the band and was replaced by Julia Rydholm (who also doubled on violin). The "Rydholm version' of Ladybug Transistor debuted with 2001"s Argyle Heir, which was supported with both North American and European tours lasting throughout the duration of the year. During this period, Jeff Baron and Sasha Bell also recorded with the like-minded the Essex Green.
