The Micronauts
This French duo comprises Christophe Monier and George Issakidis, both stalwarts of the French dance music scene. Monier attended France's first rave in 1989, at a time when French radio refused to play acid house because it was perceived as merely a passing fad. Issakidis grew up in Calgary, Canada but studied at the Sorbonne, Paris in 1990. He found the city alive with small clubs, raves and music unlike anything he had ever heard. In 1992, Monier and some of his contemporaries on the Paris club scene set up a fanzine and collective called Eden. Among the founder members were Daft Punk, Alan "Braxe" Queme of Stardust, Dimitri From Paris and Tom and Jerry Bouthier. Eventually, Issakidis was so absorbed by the music and club scene that he abandoned his course in Art History and devoted his time to making music. At an Eden rave in 1994, Daft Punk heard the Micronauts playing their first ever track, "Get Funky, Get Down" and asked if they could remix it. It was the first Daft Punk remix and was released on the UK label, Phono, two years later. In 1995, the Micronauts released "The Jazz/The Jam" on the UK's Brighton-based label, Loaded. When the Chemical Brothers visited Paris in the summer of that year, Monier and Issakidis managed to give them a test pressing. The Chemical Brothers were impressed and asked them to remix their highly successful single, "Block Rockin' Beats". The Micronauts take their influences from Kraftwerk, Public Enemy, Phuture ("Acid Tracks") and the Chemical Brothers remixes of Saint Etienne and Bomb The Bass. They want to make new, arresting sounds, or, in their own words, the sound of: ". . . sex and drugs ' they're two very dominant things in our lives." In 1998, a white label single, "The Jag", a heady mix of acid, electro and soulful vocals, resulted in the duo being signed to Virgin Records' subsidiary, Science. A full-scale release of the track in May 1999 appeared in the US on the Astralwerks label. In the same year, the Micronauts remixed tracks by 16B, OMD, Underworld and the Strike Boys.
