Developing from a series of "diwans" (North African jam sessions and musical rituals) in the Barbes district of Paris (the centre of the city's African community), Orchestre National De Barbes feature musicians from a variety of musical backgrounds (Algerian rai and chaabi, Moroccan gnawa, plus jazz, rock, funk and ragga), who combined to create a genuine street fusion of Arabic, African and western influences. En Concert was recorded live at the Agora Theatre in Evry, over two nights in November 1996 and received wide acclaim and strong sales in France. Interest in the group spread to the international world music audience, and they made their live UK debut in November 1998 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, as part of London Jazz Festival. Poulina, the group's first studio recording, was a further example of their mix of funk, reggae and various traditional North African styles.
