Clem Snide
Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, USA, this alternative roots-rock unit was formed by Eef Barzelay (vocals, guitar) in 1991, and took its name from a character in William Burroughs' novel Naked Lunch. The original line-up of Clem Snide specialized in cacophonic punk rock, but after releasing a pair of 7-inch singles ground to a halt in 1994. Barzelay relocated to New York City, where his music began to reflect his new musical hero, Neil Young. He teamed up with former associate Jason Glasser (violin, cello) as Fruit Key, before recruiting Jeff Marshall (bass) and Brad Reitz (drums) and resurrecting the Clem Snide name. The quartet's sound became slower in tempo, mostly acoustic based, and possessing elements of country. It was not until nearly seven years since their original formation that Clem Snide signed a recording contract, issuing their debut, You Were A Diamond, on the independent Tractor Beam label. Original drummer Eric Paul was then drafted in to replace the departing Reitz. Sire Records stepped in to issue 2000's Your Favorite Music, but Clem Snide's union with a major label was short-lived, as they returned to independent status for their third album, 2001's The Ghost Of Fashion. This was followed by the Moment In The Sun EP, which title track was used as the theme song to the NBC television series Ed.
