Mary Timony
b. 1970, Washington, DC, USA. Alt-rock singer/guitarist Mary Timony first came to prominence as the leader of 90s US indie rockers Helium, before launching a solo career of her own in the new millennium. Originally from Washington, DC, Timony began playing piano at an early age, before her older brother taught her chords on the guitar during her high school years. In the late 80s Timony joined the all-female punk band, Autoclave, which issued a lone self-titled release in 1990 for Dischord, before disbanding. Up next for Timony was Helium, who she fronted for most of the decade. The band issued a trio of critically acclaimed yet largely ignored albums for Matador Records before splitting up. During her tenure with Helium, Timony also found the time to join up with the short-lived indie rock supergroup, Mind Science Of The Mind, who also included members of Shudder To Think and the Dambuilders (and for their brief supporting tour, the late Jeff Buckley on bass).
