The Kingsbury Manx
This Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA-based quartet emerged from nowhere to release one of the most widely acclaimed independent albums of 2000. Kenneth Stephenson (guitar/vocals), Bill Taylor (guitar/vocals), Scott Myers (bass/keyboards) and Ryan Richardson (drums/vocals) had known each other since attending middle school together in Greensboro. The four teenagers played in local garage bands, and as they got older continued to play music together during college leave. Eventually they began recording four-track demos of their own material, and aroused enough interest from the Chicago-based Overcoat Records label to fund the recording of their self-titled debut. The album was swathed in mystery upon release, with no information about the band included anywhere in the packaging (it later turned out that Myers was responsible for the artwork). The timeless quality of the album's delicately textured psychedelic folk rock led to it becoming a cult favourite in both America and Europe.
