Wishmountain, Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy, or just plain Herbert: no matter what alias he works under, British-born Matthew Herbert has been one of electronica's most inspired creators since his first recordings and remixes in the mid 1990s. Working within self-imposed strictures that he refers to as his "Personal Contract for the Composition Of Music" (every bit as goofy and twice as challenging as Brian Eno's "Oblique Strategies"), he creates highly conceptual pieces that, despite their high-mindedness, convey heart, soul, and danceable heat by drawing on the most exciting elements of jazz, funk, and pop music. Herbert has also remixed, to much acclaim, recordings by Roisin Murphy, Yoko Ono, REM, and Björk.
