The Black Heart Procession
A folk-tinged alt rock band, Black Heart Procession was originally formed in San Diego, California, USA, during 1997. Fashioned around the nucleus of Pall Jenkins (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Tobias Nathaniel (guitar, keyboards), and Mario Rubalcaba (drums), the band's roots lay in a previous outfit, Three Mile Pilot, which contained both Jenkins and Nathaniel. When that outfit went on hiatus, the duo opted to remain together, recruited Rubalcaba, and welcomed aboard a cast of rotating extra players, as well. Between 1998 and 2000, Black Heart Procession issued an album per year, which were simply titled 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Afterwards, Rubalcaba left the band, leaving Jenkins and Nathaniel as the undisputed leaders of Black Heart Procession. The band's first post-Rubalcaba effort, 2002's Amore Del Tropico, was recorded entirely at their new 24-track studio, Stereo Disguise Laboratories, and showed Jenkins and Nathaniel to be expanding their sonic palette (as evidenced by the presence of stately instruments such as cello, xylophone, and trumpet). To entice collectors, the album was also issued as a double vinyl album, with three sides of music, and a fourth "etched" side.
