Big Pig
An Australian group who reconvened when the members reached London, England, in the mid-80s. Inspired by their hatred for the UK's Margaret Thatcher-led Conservative government, their revulsion fueled their debut album for A&M Records. Led by Sherine Abeyratne's affecting alto, the rest of the seven-piece line-up was fluid, although the main contributors were Nick Disray (vocals), Timmy Rosewarne (keyboards, vocals), Oleh Witer (drums, vocals), Neil Baker (drums, vocals), Adrian Scallione (drums, vocals) and Tony Antoniades (harmonica, vocals). The three drummers, alongside keyboards, harmonica and bass, gave the band an arresting sound, first heard by UK audiences when Janice Long broadcast a BBC Radio 1 session while the group were still based in Melbourne. With the heavy rhythms overlaid with tribal chanting, the effect on album tracks such as "Iron Lung" and the haunting closing song, "Devil's Song", was similar to a politicized Bow Wow Wow.
