Claude Young
DJ and founder of Utensil Records, Claude Young is a rarity in the Detroit dance scene in that his releases do not fit neatly under the techno banner. Attempting to escape the bitter urban desolation and drugs culture of the city, Young invested his time in music, but of a more soulful hue than his neighbours. Working first at radio station WHYT, he eventually ran his own two-hour show, before putting together his first musical ideas. The record to launch him in the early 90s was the One Complete Revolution EP. Proving popular in the UK, this afforded him invitations to London clubs like Rotary and Quirky, and releases on Andrew Weatherall's Emissions Audio Output Recordings (as Being), DJAX Up Beats and Cristian Vogel's Mosquito label. He has also recorded as Project 625 for his own DOW label and with Anthony Shakir on another personal imprint, Frictional. Young released his 1997 album debut, Soft Thru, on the Dutch Elypsia Records label.
