Sintesis
Formed around the mid-70s, this Cuban band originally comprised Eliseo Pino (guitar/vocals), Miguel Porcel (guitar/vocals), Ele Valds (keyboards/vocals), Silvia Acea (keyboards/vocals), Fernando Calveiro (guitar), Jos Mar¡a Vitier (keyboards), Enrique Lafuente (bass) and Francisco Padilla (drums). Over the years, the band's personnel has shifted, notably with the addition in the late 80s of vocalist Carlos Alfonso, who was married to Valds, but successive recordings showed that the members were all of a similar mindset and delighted in their fusion of traditional West African-based music with progressive rock. The music of West Africa from where the band's ancestors had been so rudely torn, especially that of the Yoruba people, was the foundation for the strength of S¡ntesis and they sometimes performed music that reflected religious sects of which the best known to outsiders is santeria. Indeed, their Ancestros collections were presented as if religious ceremonies.
