Kurt Rosenwinkel
b. Kurt Peter Rosenwinkel, 28 October 1970, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Playing guitar from an early age, Rosenwinkel's musical ears were opened by the music of Pat Metheny, John Scofield and Bill Frisell. After briefly attending Berklee College Of Music in Boston, in the late 80s he moved to New York where he joined Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band, an association that continued through into the following decade. When not on tour with Motian, he developed his own musical concepts with his own band at Small's, the popular after-hours New York jazz club. Formed in 1992, his colleagues in the band were Ben Street on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums. Two years later, the trio was augmented by the arrival of tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. Eager to explore new possibilities for the guitar, Rosenwinkel, who composes at the piano, decided to explore alternate tunings, thus deliberately depriving himself of all previous conceptions and forcing him to depend entirely upon his ears and touch.
